EU certificate of remote pilot competency

The operation of a drone in the ‘open’ operation category is subject to different conditions as regards the qualification of the pilot, depending on the sub-category (A1, A2, A3). Information on how the Open Categories subcategories are classified is also provided.

To operate in subcategory A2, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Completion of the EU Certificate of Competence
  2. Completion of a practical self-study
  3. Passing a theory test
  4. Declaration of completion of the practical training and examination of remote pilots via the online application of the Federal Office of Civil Aviation

Passing the theory examination or obtaining a remote pilot certificate is only possible at examination centres for remote pilots (PStF) designated for this purpose by the German Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt). Further information on qualifications for remote pilots is provided by the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA).
